What do I do if I smell gas at my property?

If you smell gas inside your building or home and are signed up for our services, submit an urgent request or call us on 1300 134 563. We recommend following the steps below to make your property safe until we can attend to fix the issue.

How do I make the property safe?
Until the gas leak can be repaired we recommend taking the below precautions to ensure the safety of residents a the property.
  • Turn off all gas and electrical appliances and extinguish all pilot lights.
  • Extinguish all naked flames and lit cigarettes. Do not attempt to use a naked flame to test for a gas leak.
  • Do not attempt to start your gas stove, light any matches or use any device or appliance that could produce a spark, including electrical and light switches or mobile phones.
  • Open all windows and doors to ventilate the gas and prevent a build-up of gas.
  • Turn the gas valve to the off position at the gas meter.
How do I turn off the gas valve at the gas meter?

On the gas meter, there will be a control valve handle (shown below). Rotate the valve 90 degrees so that it reaches a horizontal position (off).
